Mpaa Rating : Unrated

Where does an elephant go after a life in the circus? Sixteen years have passed since circus producer David Balding adopted Flora, the orphaned baby African elephant. As Flora approaches adulthood, he realizes that she is not happy performing. Ultimately, David must face the difficult truth that the circus is no place for Flora; she needs to be with other elephants. The road to Flora's retirement, however, is a difficult and emotional journey which tests their bond in unexpected ways. Ten years in the making, ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT eschews easy sentimentality and doesn't shy away from examining the problems and mysteries posed by keeping wild animals in captivity. This is the denouement of a love story between two mammals -- one of them weighing 10,000 pounds -- who share feelings of loyalty, sorrow, admiration and joy. --(c) Film Forum

New Review For Movie One Lucky Elephant

Simple enough to delight a child and complex enough to baffle a philosopher.
Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times

How affected are these animals by the physical pain of being trained or by childhood trauma? Can they suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder? What can trigger that if they can? All these questions are raised and, quite appropriately, left open.
Kenneth Turan-Los Angeles Times

What begins as a simple man-and-his-pachyderm love story ends up encompassing unexpected levels of trauma and sacrifice.
Owen Gleiberman-Entertainment Weekly

Both illuminates the bond that can form between humans and animals and also reminds us that we can never quite leap over the gulf of comprehension that lies between us and other species.
Andrew O'Hehir-Salon.com

While its story is inherently bittersweet, the movie has many charming moments. After all, it's about one smart elephant.
Mark Jenkins-NPR

Happily, while this movie's head may not always be in the right place, its heart is...
Manohla Dargis-New York Times

An extraordinary movie about inter-species relationships, and the beauty, enrichment and, ultimately, constraints of those bonds.
Brent Simon-Shared Darkness

A heartwarming and thought-provoking documentary, spanning almost a full decade, that tacitly asks tough questions about whether wild animals can ever be expected to be truly content in captivity.
Brent Simon-Shockya.com

You might be left to wonder just how "lucky" Flora the African elephant is, while watching Lisa Leeman's documentary about the fate of said orphaned pachyderm.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

Illustrating the dangers of anthropomorphizing wild animals, it shows the perils of adopting, separating and letting go - for both parent and pet.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

Flora is a gorgeous creature, truly gorgeous, and it is something to behold the affectionate relationship between the elephant and her keeper.
Marcy Dermansky-About.com

One Lucky Elephant is a poignant documentary whose simple premise masks a substantial emotional wallop...
Alison Willmore-AV Club

This superbly informative, affecting documentary about an undying bond between man and beast may well be the most moving film of 2011.
David Noh-Film Journal International

reveals how the psyche consequentially rationalizes and copes with the dissolution of domesticated hierarchy
Christopher Null-Filmcritic.com

An often captivating documentary that will tug at your heartstrings, especially if you're an animal lover
Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru

A documentary about Flora a retired circus elephant that turns into a complex and compelling meditation on interspecies relationships; one of the Best Films of 2011.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

This gentle documentary should open a much-needed debate on animal welfare and the treatment of exotic animals within a domestic setting.

Arthur

New Review For Movie Arthur Christmas

It's as bright and twinkling as a Christmas tree, decked with warmth and humor.
Amy Biancolli-San Francisco Chronicle

It's busy but buoyant, and it honors the tradition of giving with wit and style.
Bruce Diones-New Yorker

The action is swift and witty, and the 3-D effects are imaginative and not simply tacked on as with so many animated movies these days.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

The movie fails utterly at coming up with a story that merits all the eye candy.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

With a clever script that successfully updates many Christmas myths and dialogue that crackles with sophisticated wit, this movie offers the kind of pre-holiday experience that parents and children alike will appreciate.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

Everything you see in Arthur Christmas is fashioned in the service of telling a story ... brilliantly
Kathleen Murphy-MSN Movies

A new Christmas classic.
Andy Lea-Daily Star

The Aardman animators know a thing or three about sight gags and throw-away lines, and they pile up quickly, here.
Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Arthur Christmas will snuggle you up into a big, hearty festive cuddle and refuse to put you down until you've hugged it back.
Ali Gray-TheShiznit.co.uk

There are moments of charm and it is a sweet story which kids might find entertaining enough, but chances are they will become just as restless as my crowd as the film stretches on.
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

Arthur Christmas is a smart, funny, heartwarming story that will have you smile from ear-to-ear for the film's duration.
Kristal Cooper-We Got This Covered

The settings, especially on the North Pole, are deliciously intricate and the characters understatedly quirky.
Nell Minow-Beliefnet

The movie's idea that Santa and his elves have turned the distribution of presents every Dec. 24 into a major military operation makes me more than a tad uneasy.
Richard Knight-Knight at the Movies

A plucky, clever animated Xmas tale that has much of Aardman's attention to quirky detail (bulbous noses), wordplay, and unconventional heroes (Arthur's fuelled by worry).
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

In a season unexpectedly full of quality family films, Arthur Christmas may have to fight for the attention it deserves, but if there was ever an example of a film that's a crowd-pleaser without talking down to its audience, this is it.
Mark Deming-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Joseph Proimakis-Movies for the Masses

There are things you just wouldn't see in a Pixar or Disney movie. For example, one of the main elves has an eyebrow piercing, uncommented on. Even more than that: two of the boy elves kiss... each other. It's progressive.
CJ Johnson-ABC Radio (Australia)

A thoroughly entertaining movie that deserves to sleigh audiences both young and old this Yuletide.
James Croot-Flicks.co.nz

Thank goodness that even the Santas have a mom to help them sort out their turmoils.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

Quite brilliant.
Jay Stone-Ottawa Citizen

A witty and beautifully designed animated film.
David Stratton-The Australian

Arthur Christmas has charm and a breezy confidence that makes it the epitome of a simple pleasure.
Siobhan Synnot-Scotsman

Aardman films' yuletide offering is both a heartwarmer and a sly dig at the gospel of family togetherness.
Anthony Quinn-Independent

Arthur may not be perfect, but he cares. The same can be said for the film. 'Arthur Christmas' is full of just enough holiday cheer.

New Review For Movie The Kid with a Bike

The directing by the Dardenne brothers reflects their previous work: it wants to be unnoticed either for virtuosity or clumsiness, yet only virtuosos can attain this ideal.
Stanley Kauffmann-The New Republic

There is not a wasted shot in this stripped down, pared back fable. Yet, it accrues a deep and lasting power. You won't see many better this year.
Tom Charity-CNN.com

The film should be required viewing for everyone who has lost faith in the power of random acts of kindness.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

This is a film that's not always easy to watch, but just about impossible to forget.
Calvin Wilson-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"The Kid With a Bike" vibrates with desperation, frustration and the simple unfairness of life, leavened with glimpses of hope.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Cyril is one of the most inspiringly resilient, self-aware young characters to arrive on-screen in recent memory...
Ann Hornaday-Washington Post

The images speed by so fast that you hardly have time to think. But think you do. And what you think about most are all the lost and neglected children of the world.

The Dardennes have once again crafted a lean, efficient film that is plotted with singular purpose without hitting a false note.
Eric Melin-Scene-Stealers.com

Downbeat but powerful drama about childhood and love.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Common Sense Media

It's nonetheless immensely satisfying - not least in its commitment to a child protagonist whose near-feral intensity and unthinking ingratitude make him the polar opposite of cute.
Mike D'Angelo-L.A. Weekly

It's a powerful, well-crafted film and a striking depiction of a side of growing up few filmmakers have tried to put on film. Fewer still have captured it with this sort of honesty and emotional gravity.
Mark Deming-TV Guide's Movie Guide

[Thrusts] adults into the psychology of a child, pushing them into a confrontation with their own self-involvement.
William Bibbiani-CraveOnline

The Dardennes smoothly shift one gear up in the film's coda, offering a sting of humility before a flash of quiet grace. Then we're left watching after one boy on his bike, stubbornly moving, moving, moving, a force to be reckoned with and respected.
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

A frank, no-nonsense drama filled with compassion for a lost soul kid abandoned by his father.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

...a deeply humane movie that deserves to be compared with one of its obvious inspirations, Vittorio De Sica's neo-realist classic Bicycle Thieves
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

A moving, sweet and at times harrowing tale...
Rebecca Barry-Flicks.co.nz

De France does a terrific job of balancing maternal instinct with matter-of-factness, in a performance that is more human than tender - and all the more powerful for it.
Chris Foran-Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Unlike many films, it genuinely earns every feeling it evokes.
Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)

a complex interweaving of bitter reality and a deeply humane worldview that sees the possibility of redemption in even the cruelest of circumstances
James Kendrick-Q Network Film Desk

A beautiful and stirring story of unconditional compassion, of emotional honesty, and -- above all -- of hope.
Mike Scott-Times-Picayune

The Dardennes' style resists cheap sentimentality, yet in The Kid with a Bike it yields a deeply moving examination of love as a shield.

Movie Title : Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone
Release Date : Oct 7, 2011 Limited
Genre Movie :Musical & Performing Arts,Documentary

From the shifting faultlines of Hollywood fantasies and the economic and racial tensions of Reagan's America, Fishbone rose to become one of the most original bands of the last 25 years. With a blistering combination of punk and funk they demolished the walls of genre and challenged the racial stereotypes and political order of the music industry and the nation. Telling it like it is, the iconic Laurence Fishburne narrates Everyday Sunshine, a story about music, history, fear, courage and funking on the one. At the heart of the film's story is lead singer Angelo Moore and bassist Norwood Fisher who show how they keep the band rolling out of pride, desperation and love for their art. To overcome money woes, family strife, and the strain of being aging Punk rockers on the road, Norwood and Angelo are challenged to re-invent themselves in the face of dysfunction and ghosts from a painful past. -- (C) Official Site

New Review For Movie Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone

It's a hearty, thoughtful, smartly assembled, vaguely complete documentary about a rock band that, even by the standards of out-there musical acts, seemed out there both in the mid-1980s and even now.
Wesley Morris-Boston Globe

It's a movie about what it's like to almost make it in the music business, but not really, not quite. It's about coming close and watching it slip away.
Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

What makes this better than the usual Behind the Music-style doc is the frankness of its subjects and the fun way the filmmakers intersperse Fat Albert-style animation to tell their story.
John Monaghan-Detroit Free Press

Even as a hagiography, though, it's pretty interesting.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

[It] isn't the happiest movie about a band you'll ever see, but it is one of the more entertaining, and thanks to directors Lev Anderson and Christ Metzler, one of the most original.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

It seems telling just how many other musicians were willing to participate in the documentary to attest to the outfit's influence.
Mark Olsen-Los Angeles Times

A must see for Fishbone fans.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

To hear the soaring craziness of Fishbone's "Sunless Saturday" is to wonder how such musical inspiration could possibly miss.
Robert Horton-HeraldNet

It's a much more interesting story than your usual Behind the Music arc.
Luke Y. Thompson-Geekweek

Anderson and Metzler collect dozens of great bits of rehearsal and performance footage as well as intimate footage between Moore and his family.
Dan Lybarger-KC Active

"Everyday Sunshine" presents a raw lesson in how artistry and success often make incompatible partners.
Jon Niccum-Kansas City Star

Everyday Sunshine is an uplifting entry that rises to its task rather than letting the music do all the talking.
Justin Strout-Orlando Weekly

The pinnacle comes when Kendall rejoins them for an impromptu gig, stirring hope for a return to glory.
Scott Fayner-Boston Phoenix

Hold on to your hats for a heartwarming look into the private lives and public outrage of Fishbone, the critical mass that refuses to melt down.
Ron Wilkinson-Monsters and Critics

Gets the job done, and admirably, blending interviews, testimonials, concert footage and, interestingly, animation to build a full and engaging portrait of Fishbone.
Mike Scott-Times-Picayune

Everyday Sunshine doesn't do the band the disservice of falling at their feet in worship, like too many recent films about legendary musicians
Chris Barsanti-Filmcritic.com

The fun and energy of those performances show the promise that was lost - and the pleasure that's still in the music.
Chris Foran-Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Terrific, deeply affecting rock documentary that captures the unlikely assemblage of a bunch of L.A. black guys playing the kind of music no one had ever really heard before.
David Noh-Film Journal International

Seizes that tumultuous spirit, that sheer history of Fishbone, rolling it into a tremendous, informative documentary that avoids tracking footprints, instead exposing the raw nerve sensitivity within this legendary band.

Martha

New Review For Movie Martha Marcy May Marlene

Once we've got over the frustration of this promising film's abrupt ending, we're left with the feeling that you can escape a cult but you can't escape yourself.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

A purposely disturbing portrait of a damaged psyche.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Durkin depicts a horror that some among us actually live, where the search for family leads to something familiar and dangerous.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

"Martha Marcy May Marlene" will stick with you.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Sean Durkin's compulsively watchable first film is a psychological thriller camouflaged as an Ingmar Bergman-style country-house drama.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

Hawkes is, as ever, outstanding. But Olsen is a wonder.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

With a diegesis mapped along the mental contours of its protagonist, Martha Marcy May Marlene harkens back to Pasolini's notion of the cinema of poetry--and achieves it beautifully.
Violet Lucca-Film Comment Magazine

Olsen, in a captivating, career-making performance, makes Martha awkward and inscrutable, sexual yet innocent...She makes the journey a mesmerizing and chilling experience and turns a cryptic film into an unforgettable one.
Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service

A subtle, yet challenging, character drama with stand-out performances and some truly beautiful camerawork.
Ben Kendrick-ScreenRant

A disturbing psychological drama that's guaranteed to rack up more and more followers as its menacing message is spread.
Erick Weber-NECN

A brilliant exploration of the destructive power of cult conditioning.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

It may not be a fun film to watch, or one that you'd care to repeat very often - but it's a necessary experience.
Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show

Neither the thriller the trailer suggests, not the feminine, visual poem the poster suggests, this is a film about loss of self that is absolutely clear about its own identity
Catherine Bray-Film4

This is a very real and very chilling look at cult behavior, and it's understandable how this can unnerve parents who worry a lot about their adult children.
Kevin Carr-7M Pictures

This is a troubling portrait of how fear and abuse leave their tentacles in everything they touch - and a haunting one at that.
Matt Glasby-Flicks.co.nz

Olsen delivers an amazing performance and it's tragic seeing her go from a gorgeous young woman to a beautiful basket case. A must see. I've never seen a film that generates such a high level of anxiety by doing so little.
Cameron Williams-The Popcorn Junkie

The masterstroke is that Durkin only reveals why Martha is so messed up in flashbacks constructed to mirror her fractured mental state. Olsen plays it with a chilling amount of honesty and the movie creeps up on you and leaves you completely paranoid.
Eric Melin-Scene-Stealers.com

The performance of Olsen, effortlessly moving between playful girlishness, catatonia and hysterical paranoia, is remarkable.
Andrew Simpson-Fan The Fire

full review at Movies for the Masses
Joseph Proimakis-Movies for the Masses

This could have been retitled "Cognitive Dissonance: The Movie".
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

The title sounds like a demented worshipper counting her beads, which is perhaps not entirely inaccurate.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Like the ordeals of the central character, the film flickers powerfully in the memory.
Jason Wood-Little White Lies

Mesmerising.
David Edwards-Daily Mirror [UK]

It will stay with you long after watching. Guaranteed.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

A slippery thriller about fugitive states, and not knowing where you belong, or even who you are.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

It's a brave and engrossing performance from Olsen. Sadly outside of that, the film fails to deliver a satisfying climax.

Blue jeans, sock-hops and drive-in movies: the Fifties were America's age of innocence. But stalking the depths of its post-nuclear bliss, mass paranoia became fuel for Joseph McCarthy's brand of Red Scare terror propaganda. Bomb shelters were a deluxe feature in every American home, government-sponsored educational reels promised an imminent nuclear threat from across the Atlantic, and Hollywood, Babylon of the western world, hung on the brink of collapse. It was here, in the last-ditch machinations of a dying juggernaut, that a mild-mannered, civil engineer's son would become the most influential force in modern moviemaking. Corman's World tracks the triumphant rise of Hollywood's most prolific writer-director-producer, the true godfather of independent filmmaking. -- (C) Official Site

New Review For Movie Corman's World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel

Like many of the 400-odd movies Roger Corman has produced and/or directed, Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel has a title that sizzles over content that merely simmers.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

The results are solid and educative.
Tom Huddleston-Time Out

Alex Stapleton's lively, engrossing and enlightening documentary about a career that can be described as surprising on multiple counts.
Ann Hornaday-Washington Post

To fresh eyes, Corman's World may feel more like a meal; to the rest of us, it's merely a glance at the menu.
Jeannette Catsoulis-NPR

The funniest thing about Corman -- it's a joke he's in on -- is the disparity between the movies he makes and the precise, polite, almost scholarly demeanor he projects.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

An excellent introduction to a director equally adept at following his own vision and nurturing those of others.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

[I]f it doesn't offer anything new to our understanding of Corman, as filmmaker, producer, or person, it nicely encapsulates his legacy...
Sean Axmaker-Parallax View

At one point in this joyful documentary, Jack Nicholson discusses the countless cheapies produced by Roger Corman and cracks, "By mistake, he actually made a good picture every once in a while."
Matt Brunson-Creative Loafing

Along the way this documentary interviews the likes of Nicholson, Ron Howard and (of course) Corman himself. Add some scarce footage and you've got a winner that is sure to please die-hard fans as well as newbies.
James O'Ehley-Sci-Fi Movie Page

Almost any documentary on Roger Corman would be fascinating, and Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, directed by Alex Stapleton, is certainly that.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

Entertaining and informative, whetting the appetite for a more in-depth exploration of Corman's body of work.
Josh Bell-Filmcritic.com

A well-earned and affectionate spotlight on a man who, let's face it, is one of the most impressive film producers who ever lived.
Scott Weinberg-FEARnet

Great clips and interviews with, among others including Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro and William Shatner.
Mark Adams-Daily Mirror [UK]

None of it gets us anywhere truly close to the beating heart of an essentially retiring figure.
Adam Lee Davies-Little White Lies

It records the ingenuity, daring and innovation that went into his productions and drove him to create his own studio and distribution company and to take his career into his own hands.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

A frustrating documentary about a frustrating man.
Charlotte O'Sullivan-This is London

A movie buff's delight.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

A supremely watchable documentary-tribute to the exploitation king Roger Corman.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

A comprehensive look at the extraordinary career of legendary writer-director-producer Roger Corman, told through the contributions of a dazzling array of talking heads.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

Stapleton's structure is fairly by-the-numbers, but with a subject as fascinating (and archival clips as entertaining) as this, the quality is onscreen as soon as you turn on the camera.
Ian Buckwalter-DCist

Yes, it's all straight-forward, no muss filmmaking, but Roger Corman wouldn't want it any other way.
Don R. Lewis-Film Threat

Corman's World is both a pleasure and an energetic primer on the man's work.
Drew McWeeny-HitFix

Most of Roger Corman's movies are not good, but the stories behind them are fascinating. So Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel tells the Roger Corman story, in his words and, even better, in the words of his famous employees.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky was once the richest man in Russia. Today, he's one of the world's most famous political prisoners. A story of Shakespearean proportions, The New York Times has reported on Khodorkovsky in both its news and op-ed pages. Fascinating interviews with Khodorkovsky (sometimes sitting in a glass box in the courtroom), members of his family, and others portray a country transformed from its moribund Communist past to one in which power-hungry politicians are abetted by a corrupt, drunken and cynical younger generation. New Review For Movie Khodorkovsky

Tuschi has a sharp sense of tempo and shot composition, and he obviously knows how to ask questions, because he gets good answers.
Stanley Kauffmann-The New Republic

Helps to make Khodorkovsky more of a reality than the enigma he threatens to become.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

"Khodorkovsky" is a curious and admirable documentary, the product of one filmmaker's inability to let go of a story.
Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

Navigating a tangled tale such as this is like entering a hall of mirrors. "Khodorkovsky" doesn't do a good enough job of Windexing them.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

It's a perfect fit for the blend of Greek tragedy, spaghetti Western and judicial farce that defines business and politics in the New Russia.
Ella Taylor-NPR

The gripping documentary "Khodor-kovsky'' tells how Russia's richest man became its most famous political prisoner.
V.A. Musetto-New York Post

It may be fuzzy around its edges, but inside it's hard as steel.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

As Tuschi's film digs deeper, it seems to offer less information. Clearly, many people have been, and still are, affected by this phantom of a subject. This story is not over.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-San Francisco Examiner

Features frank, informative interviews (including one with Khodorkovsky after his second trial) and raises some important questions.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

A documentary that takes fewer prisoners than Putin's KGB, Tuschi's study of Russian power politics is smart, scary and sobering.
Patrick Peters-Empire Magazine

Tuschi paints a complex portrait of corrupted power.
Paul M. Bradshaw-Little White Lies

This film is a commanding insight into Putin's Russia.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Tuschi collates the evidence masterfully - TV footage, documents, interviews with ex-colleagues - to substantiate what much of the world is already convinced of.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

A convincing picture of a principled man prepared to become a jailed martyr if that's what it took to rally the people behind him.
Tim Evans-Sky Movies

An interview with Khodorkovsky, vox pops with ordinary Russians and some weird animation fail to secure contributions of great significance, let alone clarify basic issues of guilt or innocence.
-Scotsman

It's an engaging, personal story full of moving details.
Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall

Edged with cynicism and wit, Tuschi's film can't hide its admiration - but real answers lurk tantalisingly out of reach.
Jonathan Crocker-Total Film

There is a Catch 22 lurking in the murkiness of this film but most will be challenged to find it.
Ron Wilkinson-Monsters and Critics

If Khodorkovsky is not making an especially new argument, it is making it forcefully and engagingly. The form constitutes its own politics, pure or not.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

A fascinating documentary more about Khodorkovsky the "player" than about the social and political contradictions of post-Soviet Russia.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

It's unlikely to enflame American audiences with less of a stake in Russia's political goings-on, but works as a persuasive portrait of a politically toxic situation.
Alison Willmore-AV Club

Movie Overview For Khodorkovsky
Khodorkovsky, the richest Russian, challenges President Putin. A fight of the titans begins. Putin warns him. But Khodorkovsky comes back to Russia knowing that he will be imprisoned, once he returns. When I heard about it, I asked myself: why didn't he stay in exile with a couple of billions? A French family with two daughters, 10-year-old Laure and 6-year-old Jeanne, moves to a new neighborhood during the summer holidays. With her Jean Seberg haircut and tomboy ways, Laure is immediately mistaken for a boy by the local kids and passes herself off as Michael. Filmmaker Céline Sciamma brings a light and charming touch to this drama of childhood gender confusion. Zoe Heran as Laure/Michael and Malonn Levanna as Jeanne are nothing less than brilliant. This is a relationship movie: relationships between children, and the even more complicated one between one's heart and body. -- (C) Rocket Releasing

New Review For Movie Tomboy

Tomboy is a lovely reminder that the French have long been famous for a quite different sort of film-about children.
Stanley Kauffmann-The New Republic

Brisk, precisely observed, and bracingly non-preachy in its examination of a very tricky subject.
Jon Frosch-The Atlantic

Writer and director Celine Sciamma adorns the thorny dilemma with resonant allusions to gender roles...
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Modestly conceived and executed.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

"Tomboy" is tender and affectionate.
Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times

"Tomboy," a brief and sweetly refreshing French film, is the story of a lie.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

Far from surprising at any point, Tomboy nonetheless holds one's attention though its sheer force of observation.
Jeremy Heilman-MovieMartyr.com

The director's low-key approach to such a seemingly complex topic really illuminates the subject in both very basic and rather profound ways.
Richard Knight-Knight at the Movies

'Tomboy' makes its points about gender identity and confusion without resorting to cheap laughs or overwrought drama.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

This exquisite film is as pure as you can get; it's observational, it's minimalist, there's no intrusive music except where it is part of the action.
Margaret Pomeranz-At the Movies (Australia)

Sweet and well observed, the film takes us inside a typical family in a typical Paris suburb - and gives us a spin
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

Sciamma's capturing of children at play is disarmingly accurate, perfectly showing the freewheeling nature of prepubescence in all its glory.
Amber Wilkinson-Eye for Film

The film's greatest accomplishment is writer/director Celine Sciamma's stunning ability to draw natural, believable performances from her adolescent cast, who never hit a false note in this moving film.
Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com

"Tomboy" is so specific and intuitive that I kept thinking, "How do the filmmakers know this stuff?"
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

Tomboy captures a delicate moment in time before issues of sexuality so much more complicated and calculated.
Marjorie Baumgarten-Austin Chronicle

As the sisters come to see that dresses and haircuts and behaviors are a means to create a self, to communicate with others, Tomboy doesn't offer an easy answer; instead, it lets you wonder why gender must be so definitive.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

...a well-intentioned yet hopelessly inert piece of work.
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews
